Tree Pruning Services We Offer in West Auckland

Crown Thinning
We thin crowns for owners who want more light and less wind load without changing the tree's outline. Selected branches come out from inside the canopy, so the tree looks the same from the street but lets sun onto the lawn.
A thinning on a healthy tree usually takes out 10 to 20 per cent of the foliage. Tell us if the tree is notable, because the limit then drops to 10 per cent.

Crown Reduction for Overgrown Trees
Crown reduction is the work our climbers take most care over, because it shortens a tree that has outgrown its section and keeps it alive and in shape.
Each limb is cut back to a smaller branch that can take over. That shows two years later. A topped tree throws dense, weakly attached regrowth, while a reduced tree holds its form. Reductions on big gums, oaks and pines usually need rigging.

Crown Lifting Over Roofs and Driveways
Owners call us to lift a crown when low branches scrape the roof, block the drive or drag across the car. The lowest limbs come off at the trunk or at a strong fork, raising the canopy to the height you need.
A common target is 2.5 to 3 metres over a path, and enough room over a driveway for a ute or van. Mention a campervan or boat at the site visit.

Deadwooding and Hazard Pruning
Dead branches are what our arborists remove first on any job, since they are the parts that fall on cars and people. Deadwood over 50 mm thick is cut back to live tissue, along with snapped stubs and split limbs.
Deadwooding also shows how the tree is coping. A crown dying back from the tips can point to root damage or disease that pruning will not fix.

Fruit Tree and Ornamental Pruning
For fruit trees, our pruning aims at the crop, with an open centre, fewer crossing branches and fruiting wood at a height you can pick from.
Citrus, feijoas, plums and apples each fruit on different wood, so timing matters. Stone fruit is best cut after harvest in late summer to limit silver leaf. Maples, magnolias and other ornamentals get light structural work only.

Pruning Trees Near Power Lines
We prune trees growing toward overhead lines back clear of the growth limit zone set by the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003.
Vector issues a cut or trim notice when a tree encroaches that zone, and the owner is responsible for having it trimmed. A tree already against a line needs the line made safe first. Send a photo of the notice if you have one.
Pruning and Removal Work We've Done
Tree removal and pruning in West Auckland
We worked on several large trees here, removing some completely and pruning others. Our climber spent most of the job aloft on ropes and harness, first high up a tall bare trunk, then out among the open branches of a leafless tree, and later cutting limbs from a leafy crown with the chainsaw. The big deciduous tree along the fence line was kept, thinned and shaped to finish.

How a Tree Pruning Job Runs
Free site visit
An arborist looks at the tree, its health and what sits underneath it, and checks the Unitary Plan overlays for your address.
You know what can be cut before anything is cut.
Written pruning plan and price
The quote names the work, such as thin by 15 per cent or lift to 3 metres over the drive.
Two quotes are easy to compare when both say what is coming off.
Booking and neighbours
A date is set, and you are told if branches overhang a neighbour or the road.
Nobody next door is surprised by a crew.
Pruning and lowering
Climbers make the cuts and lower bigger branches on ropes past roofs and gardens.
Lawns, roofs and garden beds stay intact.
Chipping and clean-up
Branches go through the chipper on site, leaves are raked, and you choose whether the mulch stays.
The section is tidy the same day.

Tree Pruning Prices in West Auckland
| Tree size | Guide price (excl. GST) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Small or fruit tree, under 5 m | $250 to $500 | Pruning from the ground or ladder, clean-up |
| Medium tree, 5 to 12 m | $500 to $1,200 | Climbing crew, chipping, clean-up |
| Large tree, over 12 m | $1,200 to $3,000 | Climbing and rigging, chipping, clean-up |
| Several trees on one visit | Quoted together | Set-up shared across all the trees |
These ranges exclude GST and are a guide. Small jobs sit at the top of their band because travel and set-up cost the same for one tree as for three. The written price follows the site visit.
What Moves the Price of Tree Pruning
- Height and spread, and whether the tree must be climbed or can be reached from the ground.
- What sits under the canopy. Roofs, glasshouses, lines or a neighbour's garden mean branches are lowered on ropes.
- Access for the chipper. A long carry up steep steps adds labour.
- How much is coming off. A light deadwood is quicker than a full reduction.
- Overlays. A notable tree may need consent or a pruning staged over more than one year.
- Waste. Mulch left on site costs less than taking it away.
Pruning Rules and Tree Protection Across West Auckland
Most trees on private sections in Auckland can be pruned without a resource consent, because no class or species has automatic protection outside the Hauraki Gulf islands. The exceptions matter in the west. A tree is protected if it is scheduled as notable, sits in a Significant Ecological Area, grows near a stream or the coast, or is covered by a consent condition or a covenant on the title.
Notable trees are where most pruning questions start. Under Auckland Unitary Plan rule D13.6.1, a scheduled notable tree can lose no more than 10 per cent of its live growth in any one calendar year as a permitted activity. Anything beyond that needs resource consent. With more than 100 notable tree overlay entries in each West Auckland local board area, every address gets looked up before we quote.
In Titirangi, Laingholm and the Oratia foothills, pruning often happens beside kauri. The National Pest Management Plan for kauri, in force since August 2022, treats the soil within three times the radius of a kauri's dripline as a kauri hygiene zone. Crews clean boots and gear before and after working inside one, because the pathogen behind kauri dieback travels in soil.
Pruning is the first option we look at. Only when a tree cannot be made safe or kept to its space does the talk turn to removal, which our West Auckland arborists handle as well.
Trees on the road frontage often grow into overhead lines. Since amendments in October 2024, the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 define a cut-back zone up to 1 metre beyond the growth limit zone and a notice zone up to 2 metres beyond it. Vector sends a hazard warning once a tree enters the notice zone, and pruning it back at that point is far easier on the tree than an emergency cut later.
