Palm Removal and Palm Care Services

Palm Tree Removal
We remove palms whole where there is a clear drop zone, or in sections lowered on ropes where a roof, fence or garden is in the way.
Palm trunks are heavy for their size and full of water, so a 6 metre trunk is a two-person carry at best. Tell us how far the palm is from the street, as that decides how much hand-carrying is involved.

Phoenix Palm Removal
Phoenix palms are the palms our crew takes most care over, because the base of each frond carries spines long enough to go through gloves. The crown is stripped of fronds first, then the trunk comes down in sections.
A mature Phoenix head is heavy enough to break a roof, so on tight sections it is lowered on a rope from a separate anchor. Every frond is bagged or chipped, and no spines are left in the lawn.

Frond and Seed Head Trimming
If you want to keep the palm, our trimming takes off dead and drooping fronds, seed heads and the old frond bases that sparrows nest in.
A trim every one to two years keeps fronds off the roof and stops seed dropping on paths and cars. The green crown stays intact, since cutting live fronds back hard weakens the palm.

Bangalow and Fan Palm Removal
Bangalow and Chinese fan palms are on Auckland's pest plant list too, and we take them out before their seedlings spread through the garden.
Both are lighter than a Phoenix palm, and many can be felled whole on an open section. Bangalow seed stalks are messy, so removal is best timed before the next fruiting. Tell us how many there are.

Palm Stump Grinding
Once a palm is down, our grinder takes the stump below ground level, usually on the same visit.
Palm roots form a dense fibrous ball with no taproot, so the ground can be turfed or replanted straight away. Expect the spot to settle a little as the fibre breaks down. Grinding on the same day saves a second trip for the grinder.
Palm Tree Jobs We've Done
Palm tree removal in West Auckland
Two tall palms stood right beside a brick house and the low decorative wall along the boundary with the neighbours. Working from the top on ropes, our climber cut the fronds off, while a ground worker cleared everything that came down below. With the heads stripped, the trunks were taken down in sections, keeping the work tight and controlled next to the house.

Palm tree crown lift in Helensville
Several tall fan palms on this property carried thick skirts of old brown fronds hanging down their trunks. Our climber worked up each palm in a harness with a flipline, cutting the dead fronds away and lifting the crowns so only the green growth remained at the top. Power lines ran along the road nearby. The finished photo shows clean trunks standing tall above the grass, with a work truck parked below.

What Moves the Price of Palm Removal
- Species. Phoenix palm spines slow the work and need careful waste handling.
- Height and trunk diameter, which set the weight of each section.
- The drop zone. Open lawn lets a palm come down whole, while roofs and fences mean lowering it in pieces.
- Waste. Palm trunks and fronds are slow to chip and heavy to cart.
- Access from the street for the truck.
- Number of palms. A group shares one set-up.
Phoenix Palms and Auckland's Pest Plant Rules
Phoenix palms were planted all over Auckland through the last century, and many in West Auckland gardens are now well over the height of the house. They seed heavily, and birds carry the fruit into gardens and bush. Seedlings then turn up in lawns, garden beds, under hedges and along bush edges, and each one grows into another palm to remove.
Auckland Council lists the Phoenix palm as a pest plant in its Regional Pest Management Plan 2020-2030. You must not breed, sell, distribute or plant one, apart from moving an existing palm within the same property. The council can direct an owner to destroy a palm planted in breach of those rules, and the palm has priority status in the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area.
Some palms are protected, though. A few Phoenix palms in Auckland are scheduled as notable trees or sit inside historic heritage places, and those need consent to remove. The overlays for your address are checked before we quote, using the council's Unitary Plan viewer.
Palm waste is the other issue. Phoenix fronds and trunks are spiny and slow to break down, so they are no use as garden mulch or in a home compost heap. Everything from a Phoenix palm leaves the site on the truck, which also stops seed in the crown spreading around the garden.
The spines are the practical problem. Tiaki Tāmaki Makaurau, the council's environment programme, recommends that palms past seedling stage are controlled by a qualified arborist because of the injuries the spines cause. Our crews wear cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, and every frond leaves the site bagged or chipped.
If the palm is one of several trees you want gone, the same crew can take the rest down too, as part of our tree removals across West Auckland.
