Hedge Services We Offer in West Auckland

Regular Hedge Trimming
Regular trims are the core of our hedge work, keeping boundary and privacy hedges at the height and width you have chosen. Fast growers such as griselinia, photinia and pittosporum need cutting twice a year, slower box and lonicera once.
A hedge cut slightly narrower at the top than the base lets light reach the lower leaves, so it stays thick to the ground.

Hedge Height and Width Reduction
When a hedge has got away from you, our team reduces its height and width in one visit or over two seasons, depending on how well the species recovers.
Griselinia and privet resprout from bare wood. Leylandii and most other conifers do not, so cutting them back past the green leaves leaves a permanent brown face. That is the first thing we check.

Hedge Removal
Taking out a hedge completely is a job we do from top to roots, cutting it down, chipping the branches and grinding the stumps so the line can be fenced or replanted.
Old hedges often have fences, wires, irrigation or a neighbour's garden grown through them. Talk to your neighbour before removing a boundary hedge, as it may be jointly owned.

Formal and Topiary Shaping
For formal hedges, our cutting follows string lines for square tops, straight faces and clean corners on box, lonicera and corokia.
Shaped hedges need cutting more often to hold their lines, usually two to three times a year. Bring a photo of the shape you are after. Clippings from formal hedges are fine and dense, so the ground is sheeted first to catch them.

Shelter Belts and Tall Hedges
Shelter belts on lifestyle blocks are trimmed by our arborists once they pass the height a ladder can safely cover, often 5 metres and up.
Tall belts beside driveways and roads need regular side-trimming to keep vehicles clear. Tell us if the belt is near power lines, because that changes how and when it is cut. Belts are cut on the sides first, then topped.

Street-Facing and Corner Hedges
Hedges on corner sections and street boundaries are trimmed by us to keep footpaths clear and the view of the road open for drivers backing out.
Regular cutting keeps the footpath usable for prams and mobility scooters, and avoids a council notice to cut it back. Low hedges at the corner of a driveway are the ones that block the view of oncoming cars, so they are kept lower than the rest of the boundary.
Hedge Trimming Work We've Done
Conifer tree line removal and hedge trimming in Waitakere
Two jobs on one property. Out front, a straggly line of conifers with thin, bare tops ran along the lawn beside the road. We removed the whole row, which opened the yard up to the street and left clear lawn around the letterbox and drive. Elsewhere on the section, a tall lemonwood hedge had grown wide and shaggy beside a picket fence and a picnic table, so we trimmed it back to a neat, even face.

What Moves the Price of Hedge Trimming
- Length and height, and whether both faces can be reached.
- Species. Thorny hedges and dense conifers are slower to cut and chip.
- How overgrown it is. A reduction takes far longer than a maintenance trim.
- Access to the neighbour's side and the footpath.
- Green waste, chipped and removed or left as mulch.
- Obstacles such as fences, wires and garden beds grown into the hedge.

Hedges, Boundaries and Council Rules in West Auckland
On tighter sections in Massey, Westgate and Ranui, a hedge is often the main privacy screen between houses, and in Auckland's mild, wet climate it puts on growth for most of the year, which is why two cuts a year is the norm.
Street-facing hedges come under council rules. Auckland Council can issue a notice ordering a tree to be trimmed or removed if it damages a road, drains or other public amenities, or obstructs traffic or the view of road traffic. If the owner ignores the notice, the council can enter the property, do the work and charge the owner for it.
Tall hedges and shelter belts can also reach overhead lines. Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, the tree owner must keep vegetation out of the growth limit zone around Vector's lines, and Vector issues a cut or trim notice when it encroaches.
Out on the foothills, removing a long shelter belt is a bigger decision than trimming one. On rural-zoned land, clearing more than 250 square metres of vegetation needs resource consent. A hedge on a shared boundary also needs the neighbour's agreement before it is cut down.
Species decides how often a West Auckland hedge needs cutting. Griselinia, photinia, pittosporum and privet respond to regular clipping and resprout from older wood, so a neglected one can be brought back over a season or two. Leylandii and most other conifers cannot, which is why an overgrown conifer hedge is reduced gradually or replaced. Spring trims also run into nesting birds, so hedges are checked for nests before the first cut of the season.
A hedge that has grown into a row of trees may be better felled than cut back, and that is a call our arborists across West Auckland can make at the site visit.
