Stump Grinding Services in West Auckland

Single Stump Grinding
A single stump in a lawn or garden bed is the simplest job we do, and once the grinder is set up it rarely takes more than an hour. Grinding goes to around 200 to 300 mm below ground, deep enough to returf or replant over.
If you want a new tree in the same spot, say so, because that needs a deeper grind and more chips taken out.

Large Stumps and Root Flares
Large stumps from pines, gums and macrocarpa are where our grinding time goes, because a 1 metre stump has a root flare far wider than its cut face.
The flare and main buttress roots are ground out to the edge of the lawn or path you want back. Surface roots that lift paving or catch the mower are chased out along their length. Point them out at the site visit so they are part of the job.

Palm Stump Removal
Palm stumps behave differently, so our crew treats them as a job of their own. A palm has no taproot, just a dense ball of fibrous roots, and the trunk fibre clogs a grinder faster than hardwood.
Once ground out, the spot is easy to replant. If it was a Phoenix palm, tell us, because its seedlings are worth clearing at the same time.

Hedge Stump Rows
Removed hedges leave rows of stumps, which we grind out as one continuous line so the boundary can be fenced, planted or turned into a garden bed.
A 20 metre row of old griselinia or privet takes longer than its size suggests, because the root zones overlap. Tell us what goes there next, since a new fence needs the line clear for post holes.

Stump Removal Before Building or Landscaping
Builders and landscapers bring us in when stumps sit where a driveway, deck or retaining wall is going. For structural work the grind goes deeper and every chip is removed, so the basecourse and slab sit on firm, clean soil.
Share the plans or mark the footprint, and the grind depth is set to suit what is being built on top.

Stump Grinding Near Kauri
On sections with kauri nearby, our grinding is planned around the kauri hygiene zone in the National Pest Management Plan, which runs to three times the radius of the tree's dripline.
Grinding disturbs soil, so boots, the grinder and its wheels are cleaned before and after. If you are unsure whether a nearby tree is kauri, ask at the site visit.

What Moves the Price of Stump Grinding
- Diameter at ground level, measured across the widest part of the root flare.
- Depth. A standard grind for turf is quicker than a deep grind for building.
- Access. Steps, narrow side paths and steep slopes slow the work down.
- Species. Eucalyptus and other dense hardwoods grind slower than pine or palm.
- Surface roots that need chasing out beyond the stump.
- Chips. Left in the hole, spread on the garden, or taken away.

Stumps, Kauri and Steep Sections in West Auckland
Stumps left too long cause their own trouble. A rotting stump can send up suckers, and decaying roots under a lawn leave hollows as they collapse. Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root plate in one visit.
Kauri add a rule of their own. Under the National Plan rules for kauri, since 2 August 2023 earthworks inside a kauri hygiene zone have needed an earthworks risk management plan. That zone runs to three times the radius of a kauri's dripline. Stump grinding disturbs the same soil, so on sections in Titirangi, Laingholm, Waiatarua and the foothills, kauri come up at the first visit and the job is planned around them.
Those suburbs sit inside the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area, 27,720 hectares of ranges, foothills and coast given its own Act of Parliament in 2008. Sections there are steep, and many stumps can only be reached on foot. Access decides how each stump is ground, and it is the main reason we price after seeing the site.
Surface roots are the part most people underestimate. A mature tree's roots spread well beyond its dripline, mostly in the top 600 mm of soil, so a stump near a path, drive or retaining wall usually has roots running under it. Those are ground out along the line of the damage, and the deeper ones are left to rot in place, which does the ground no harm. In the urban west the pressure is new building. Henderson-Massey grew 5.4 per cent between the 2018 and 2023 Censuses, to 124,779 people, and every new build on a cleared section starts with the stumps.
Grinding is also the final step when a tree comes down, and anyone booking a felling with our West Auckland tree removal service can have the stump done on the same visit.
